Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan has been played by Harrison Ford, Alec Baldwin, and Ben Affleck, but in this incarnation it's Chris Pine who takes on the iconic role of the spy who saves the world. In Paramount Pictures' Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, Pine plays a contemporized Jack Ryan while Kevin Costner co-stars as his mentor and Kenneth Branagh directs and plays the Russian villain. Together in Los Angeles for a press conference in support of the film's January 17, 2014 release, Pine, Costner and Branagh talked about this new take on the character and creating a new story that fits snuggly within Clancy's Jack Ryan world.  Academy voters managed a few surprises but also proved they could fall in step with the majority of awards groups by awarding American Hustle and Gravity 10 nominations each. 12 Years a Slave followed close behind with nine, while some films thought to have been frontrunners earned barely any notice.
